It is the first question that someone should ask before looking for a domain name and web hosting.

What I’m trying to achieve when doing so?

Some of the reasons are as follows:

  • It’s cool
  • My friend or competitor has one, so I should have one.
  • I need one to put on my business card.
  • I want others to see my site or product/services that I sell.
  • I’m applying for something, and it requires a domain name.
  • I want to become rich.
  • I want to phish someone.
  • I came across a cool name which I want to work on it afterwards.
  • Or lastly, there is a promo, and I need to buy a name.

Is it a necessity?

It depends on the type of business that you are operating. I’ve seen many businesses that operate without having a website, and the latter does not bring any additional value for them.

  • What message are you trying to convey in your website?
  • Why does someone need to come to your website?
  • How frequent will the website be updated?

These are the critical questions that you will need to ask yourself before building one. Some clients often left their websites in the same state that it was when it went live. No content update nor security patches installed. Such action leaves the website vulnerable to attacks, and this can be very disastrous for e-commerce websites or big brands.

Off the shelf solutions

Everyone wants to save some money and think that designing a website is easy. The answers are yes and no. If you want an amateur job, you can use some site builders like “wix.com”. But if you want a professional look and something that can drive your organic traffic, you should hire a professional. Your website represents your image. If it has an amateur look, people will be hesitant to buy as it may appear to be a scam.

Conclusion

Before jumping to an internet presence, try to set up the objectives and purpose of the site. Also, try to set up a long term plan and success metrics to measure its success in the future.

This can be an exhaustive task as nearly any name you can think about is already registered. However, on the other side, we now see quite a list of custom top-level domains.

In this article, I will cover some tips that will allow you to make the best choice.

Brand

If you already have a brand name or company name, try to use the same whole name or subset of the name in the domain name. The latter will make it relevant to the content you are exposing to the people.

If its a subbrand, you can either use a subdomain or a separate domain name.

Accessibility

  1. Try to use plain English words for the domain name.
  2. Do not use numbers unless necessary.
  3. Do not use vowels.
  4. Avoid grammar mistakes.

Easy to remember

  1. Try to keep it short.
  2. Keep it simple – no fancy combination.
  3. Use known Top-level domain extension.
  4. Or a country domain extension.

To avoid

  • Grammar mistake – unless done intentionally
  • More than 20 characters long
  • Usage of non-Latin characters – use only a to z.
  • Domain name as a number.
  • Successive dash (example; i–t.com)

I hope you have the above info quite useful.
